UK's Starmer says coalition to beef up Ukraine security in any peace deal
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stresses the United Kingdom's intention to provide "robust and credible" security guarantees to prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine again as Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to sign up to a US-brokered truce proposal as fighting rages on the ground. "We will build up Ukraine's own defences and armed forces and be ready to deploy as a'coalition of the willing' in the event of a peace deal to help secure Ukraine on the land, at sea and in the sky," Starmer said on Saturday after a virtual meeting with 25 European Union and other world leaders as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "We agreed military planners would convene again in the UK this week to progress practical plans for how our militaries can support Ukraine's future security," Starmer added. The meeting was held after Putin on Friday agreed in principle to an immediate 30-day ceasefire put forward by Washington and already accepted by Ukraine. But on Friday, Putin also said there were issues to work out.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,111
One civilian was killed and three more were reportedly injured in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow in months. Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence units destroyed at least 69 drones flying towards Moscow in a "massive" attack that later reports said involved more than 90 drones. Four airports in the Moscow region and the Domodedovo train network were forced to suspend services due to the attack. Several apartments were also damaged while Russia's TASS news agency reported a large fire in a car park near the Russian capital. Pro-Russian war bloggers said Kremlin forces have advanced further into the country's Kursk region as part of a major encirclement operation to push out thousands of Ukrainian soldiers holding territory inside Russia.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,005
Russia's air defence systems destroyed seven Ukrainian missiles overnight over the Kursk region, Kursk regional governor Alexei Smirnov wrote on his Telegram channel. Falling debris from destroyed Ukrainian drones sparked a fire at an industrial facility in Russia's Kaluga, according to regional governor Vladislav Shapsha. He said there were no injuries and that three drones were destroyed. Russian forces captured a British mercenary, who identified himself as James Scott Rhys, who is fighting with the Ukrainian army in Russia's Kursk region, a security source told Russia's RIA Novosti state news agency. Air defences were in operation in Kyiv in response to a new Russian drone attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.
Ukraine's Zelenskyy says war with Russia is being pushed 'beyond borders' as North Korea joins in
Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that the thousands of North Korean soldiers expected to reinforce Russian troops on the front line in Ukraine are pushing the almost three-year war beyond the borders of the warring parties. Western leaders say North Korea has sent some 10,000 soldiers to help Russia's military campaign and warn that its involvement in a European war could also unsettle relations in the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan and Australia. Zelenskyy said he spoke to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and told him that 3,000 North Korean soldiers are already at military bases close to the Ukrainian front line and that he expects that deployment to increase to 12,000.

Ukraine rights envoy urges response to alleged execution of captured troops
Ukraine's human rights ombudsman has urged international organisations to respond to an allegation that several Ukrainian prisoners of war were executed in Russia's Kursk region. DeepState, a Ukrainian battlefield analysis site close to Ukraine's Defence Ministry, said that Russian troops killed nine Ukrainian "drone operators and contractors" on October 10 after they had surrendered. Dmytro Lubinets said on Sunday that the international community "must not turn a blind eye" to the alleged executions. The ombudsman wrote on Telegram that he had sent letters to the United Nations and the International Red Cross about the incident, referring to it as "another crime committed by the Russians". Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin also said his office had opened a criminal investigation into the alleged execution and said killing prisoners of war was a "gross violation" of the Geneva Convention.

Eight killed in Russian drone attacks on medical centre in Sumy, Ukraine
At least eight people have died in two consecutive Russian drone attacks on a medical centre in the northeast Ukrainian city of Sumy, Ukrainian officials have said. The first attack on Saturday morning killed one person, and it was followed by another attack while patients and staff were evacuating, Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on his Telegram channel that Russia had hit the hospital using Shahed drones, stating that eleven people were injured. Sumy lies just across the border from Russia's Kursk region where Kyiv launched a shock offensive on August 6, which it says is aimed partly at creating a "buffer zone" inside Russia. Regional prosecutors said the first attack in Sumy on Saturday took place at about 7:35am (04:35 GMT), hitting the hospital where there were 86 patients and 38 staff.

Moscow targeted with largest drone attack of war with Ukraine: Russian officials
Ukraine targeted Moscow on Wednesday in what Russian officials called one of largest drone strikes on the capital since the war began in 2022. All 11 drones heading toward the capital in the Moscow region were destroyed, Russia's Ministry of Defense said. In total, Russia said its air defenses downed 45 Ukrainian drones, including 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk. "This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones," Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel, adding that strong air defenses around the capital prevented the drones from striking their intended targets. Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defense systems, which then set off car alarms.

Ukraine targets Moscow in 'one of largest ever' drone attacks
Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow, as it presses on with a major incursion into Russia's Kursk region, Russian authorities said. Russia's Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday that air defence forces shot down 11 drones over Moscow and its surrounding region, with some reportedly downed over the city of Podolsk some 38km (24 miles) south of the Kremlin. "This is one of the largest ever attempts to attack Moscow with drones," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app. No damage or casualties were reported, he said in an earlier post. Drone attacks on Moscow are rare.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 906
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time stated the aim of Ukraine's August 6 incursion into Russia's Kursk region, saying the operation was necessary to create a buffer zone. Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said the air force destroyed a second strategically important bridge over the Seym River in the Kursk region. He posted an aerial video of a blast tearing through the bridge, which appeared to be near the village of Zvannoye, about 15km (nine miles) north of the Ukrainian border. Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia's southern Rostov region, said falling debris from a Ukrainian drone attack triggered a large fire at an oil storage facility in the town of Proletarsk. There were no reports of injuries.

Belarus says Ukraine amassing troops at border amid incursion into Russia
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says Kyiv has stationed more than 120,000 soldiers along its border with Belarus, the country's state news agency reported, as fighting continues amid Ukraine's incursion into Russia's Kursk region. Lukashenko, a staunch ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Sunday that Minsk had deployed nearly a third of its armed forces along the entire border in response to the Ukrainian deployment, BelTA reported. Kyiv did not immediately respond to the claims. "Seeing their aggressive policy, we have introduced there and placed in certain points – in case of war, they would be defence – our military along the entire border," BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying in an interview with Russian state television. The president made it clear that should Ukraine try to enter Belarusian soil, they will be on the offensive, Jabari added.
